Save to the Toilet
WVO Zorg gave the HZ the assignment to improve the situation of the residents of their new retirement home in Vlissingen. Together with a group of Engineering students and HBO zorg (healthcare) students, we worked together to find the problems these residents had. To find a problem, we did interviews with both the residents and the staff of the elderly home. This way we found out that the residents had trouble finding the toilet in the dark. They often can’t find the light button and turning on the light is not that healthy for people that already have trouble sleeping. This project had a large focus on users. We did both user testing and interviews with the elderly and staff of WVO.

With the pocket light of our mobile phones and a prototype, we tested the light road first on our own team to see if it was visible in the dark. After that, we line up 3 plastic cups one with a ball beneath it. One of the cups was placed on the light road with the ball under it and the other 2 in the dark. This time we used strangers. Before they entered the darkroom we told them to collect one cup, the intention being that they picked the one on the light road. Surprisingly they all picked the cups in the dark. When we asked if the light road was visible they all answered yes. When we asked why they picked the cups in the dark, they all answered that they thought it was a trick.
Now we knew it worked and that the intention of the road was clear we asked strangers that had glasses to do our test. Elders generally don’t have the best eyesight anymore and that is why we tried to use people with glasses. We asked them to take off their glasses and we told to collect the ball again and this time we added that this wasn’t a trick. Now more people followed the path but some others still thought it was a trick and picked up a “dark” cup.
